This was a pet peeve of one of my highschool English teachers, so I had it drilled into me never to use “alot”. But before that class I spelt it that way all the time. I wonder if alot will enter into the language?

(On a related note, I find it fun to attempt to anticipate what English will be like 100 years from now. What wacky misspellings (<— another word that I hate) and truncated former compound words will enter common usage? (yes brunch, I’m talking about you))

My most common mistake now (one that I have to consciously avoid) is “explaination”. I just don’t understand why that first “i” shouldn’t be there darn it!

Ah yes, alot. I work at a newspaper, and this and “definately” have to be the two most common errors.
