One of these days I’m going to find a law that abuses quotes like this, break it, and then take my case all the way to the Supreme Court. Headline: Florida Man “Breaks” Law, Goes Free.

  2. I’ve thought about this kind of error. It is common enough that I’ve come to the conclusion that some folks think quotation marks are a way to show emphasis instead of hedging.

    “No” swimming: intent to emphasize the word.

    No “swimming”: intent to hedge…what might pass as swimming is not really swimming.

  3. I see that a lot on signs. Maybe italics are hard to print or read on that kind of sign?

  4. When text-formatting options are lacking, and emphasis is desired, just go for the _underscore_.

  5. Quotes as emphasis are common. I once knew a girl who used quotes instead of parentheses!
