Sorry Thank. I didn’t “realize” it was your “door.”

  1. Surely they mean that the door is named “Close”. And they ask you to thank them for it.

  2. Uhg. This is a huge pet peeve of mine. My co-workers used to do this all the time at me old job. I finally couldn’t take it any longer and brought it up. Their explanation was that they wanted to ‘emphasize” the word with quotes. My other co-worker, who shared the annoyance with me tried explaining to them that quotes do not add emphasis, but instead mean that you are quoting someone or possibly using irony of some sort. Their reply “you do it your way, we’ll do it ours.” It was crazy.

  3. Quotation marks aside, how about that comma?

  4. No, no, you’re misinterpreting it! “Door” is a misspelling of “dour”, and “Please” is a poor phonetic attempt at “policeman”.

So really, the sign is there to express gratitude to the grumpy cop named “Officer Close”.

  5. It’s Tom Hanks’ door.

  6. They have also placed commas after Close, making it sound like a noun instead of a verb.

  7. I still really can’t understand how people can think that it is a good idea to use quotation marks for emphasis.

My favorite example is by a bus company with the slogan “Travel ‘comfortably’ – travel by bus!”

I made a post with that and some other examples at my blog if anyone is interested. http://zlovers.blogspot.com/2008/08/seriously-what-is-up-with-people-using.html

  8. I’ve had to deal with the quotes-for-emphasis people before too, but explained it by comparing written quotes to air quotes (which obviously indicate irony).

  9. People who use quotation marks for emphasis are “morons”.

Although it’s possible that Thank just wants us to figuratively close his door, and not literally close it.
